Breakthroughs amid Changes — A New Era for Liberal Education

In 2021, the Ministry of Education in China imposed the “double-reduction policy” on non-official education facilities to reduce burnout among students, restore market morals, and diminish inequalities in educational resources. Policymakers and the general public in China began to shift focus and advocate for liberal education, an approach widely adopted in the West, which aims to cultivate students’ internal drive for learning, competencies, transferable skills, and ultimately broaden the educational horizon. Integrating liberal education principles into basic education curricula would bring positive changes for students in the post-pandemic world, support them to go beyond conventional academic expectations, and thrive with creativity, integrity, and well-being.

Our subforum will discuss the following:

What does liberal education value?

Will liberal education further increase learning burnout in students?

How does the application of liberal education contribute to students’ long-term holistic development?

We wish to provide insights into how liberal education could benefit the next generation of students by delving into these questions.
